Many residents recently became aware of a survey that is being circulated to determine what our community needs to grow and prosper. The survey is intended to provide input from the community on how best to utilize the money that could be generated from a ½ cent local option sales tax through the guidelines of a statute commonly known as LB840.
The survey is asking for your opinion of 4 listed categories that the money could be used for:
- Downtown Redevelopment: It is important to note that this category could include the central business district, courthouse square business district, Crestview, or any other business district that could use assistance.
- Industry Development: One of the most important factors in this category is the retention of current job creators. Sometimes we limit our scope in this area to our major manufacturers, and granted they are critical for our economic well-being, but we also need to keep in mind, NPPD, Peru State College, Auburn Public Schools, Nemaha County Hospital, SENDS, and a host of other employers.
- Business Development: Start up, expansion, retention, and technical assistance are some of the factors that could be used in this category.
- Tourism: Is tourism important to Auburn? Maybe. Is it important to Nemaha County? Absolutely. Some money could be channeled into specific activities at Brownville, or we could be part of a multi-county consortium to support lots of tourist attractions in southeast Nebraska.
There is one more category listed that may be the most important from a feed-back standpoint. That category is “Other”. This is the area where you can put down your thoughts on what you think is most important to our town and county. What do we need to make our town more family friendly? What do we baby boomers need to make our town a better place in which to retire? What facilities do we need to make our town more livable? Maybe you think we have housing or shopping or cultural issues that you would like to see addressed. Put anything you want on the survey. It’s your town.
